How much Sleep does a Human Being need?

Each and every person has their own sleeping needs. Some people sleep 9 hrs at every night in order to feel active and fresh at next day and some people need only seven hours of sleep. But suppose more than 9 hrs of night sleep and still sleepiness causes at day time. You don’t think but excessive daytime sleepiness is a sign of sleep disorder. Extreme Sleeping (Sleep Disorder)

People who are suffering from Idiopathic Hypersomnia may experienced continuous and frequent sleepiness. There are some other reason for excessive sleepiness such as Narcolepsy, movement disorders during sleep, obstructive sleep apnea and having lot of medications. Chronic sleep deprival is also a cause of extreme sleepiness but in this case extra sleep reduces the sleepiness.

Hypersomnia Symptoms 

You should consult to your physician if you are suffering from extreme sleepiness about the time period and seriousness of symptoms. Your physician may refer you to the sleep expert who will take an entire medical record in order to figure out the all condition that can be involved. You can be included to do sleep study in which some specific criteria is followed for the examination of “Idiopathic Hypersomnia”. They are:-

A multiple Sleep Latency Test (SLT) of less than 10 min.

Normal Polysomnography results.

The absence of mental and medical disorder that can be account for the symptoms, that include some other sleep problems like Narcolepsy or post traumatic Hypersomnia.

Suffering from head symptoms for at least 6 months that have not occurred within eighteen months of head trauma.

Idiopathic Hypersomnia Treatment 

The common treatments for extreme sleepiness are stimulant medications. These medicines are not the alternative for sleep.

You should maintain a regular sleep schedule and reset your circadian rhythm.

You should naps whenever possible.

You must avoid alcohol and medication that can cause drowsiness.

Talk to your friend, co workers and family members about your extreme sleepiness and its symptoms so that they can help you when needed.
